What is Real ID

Real ID is a feature that lets you connect with friends over Battle.net using your registered real name, displayed in the format [First Name] [Last Name].

Real ID Settings

When you enable Real ID, you and your friends will be able to see each other's real names, but only if you're connected as Real ID friends. No other personal information outside of the real name is shared. Real ID is enabled by default, except where required by law to be disabled.

What are Friends?

The Friends feature on Battle.net lets you connect and stay in touch with other players. Once you add someone as a friend, you can chat across games and platforms, see their online status, form cross-realm groups in World of Warcraft, and receive friend suggestions based on mutual connections. You can choose to connect using either your BattleTag or Real ID, depending on your privacy preferences.

Battle.net Friends & Real ID

If you have Real ID enabled, you can choose to share your real name when sending or accepting friend requests. If Real ID is disabled, all friend requests will be sent using your BattleTag, and your friends will only see your BattleTag in future interactions.

Battle.net Friends Settings

The ability for you to access your friends list and make friends can be managed through the Friends Settings. Friends is enabled by default, except where required by law to be disabled.

What is Friends of Friends Suggestions

Friends of Friends Suggestions is a feature that promotes your account to mutual friends you haven’t yet added over the Battle.net Desktop, Mobile App.

Friends of Friends Suggestions & Real ID

If both Real ID and Friends of Friends Suggestions are enabled, your Real ID name will be displayed in the suggestion list for those mutual friends. You can disable either setting—Real ID or Friends of Friends Suggestions—to prevent your real name from appearing in Friends of Friends Suggestions.

Friends of Friends Suggestions Settings

When you enable Friends of Friends Suggestions, your account will appear in the Suggested Friends list of mutual friends on their Battle.net Desktop, Mobile App. Friends of Friends Suggestions is enabled by default, except where required by law to be disabled.

What is Online Status for Friends

Every Battle.net account displays an online status to the player's friends list. The available status options are: Online, Offline, Away, and Busy. You can update your status by adjusting the status indicator option drop down via the Battle.net Desktop, Mobile App or have the system update automatically for you.

Online Status for Friends & Real ID

If you have Real ID enabled, your real name may be displayed to your Real ID friends when your online status changes. If Real ID is disabled, your friends will only see your BattleTag.

You can manage your Real ID, Friends, Friends of Friends setting preferences through the Battle.net Account Privacy & Communication Settings. Setting updates could take minutes to hours to take effect depending on the service.

If Parental Controls are enabled on your account, any changes to the settings must be made through your parent account.
